ATTUKAL BHAGHAVATHY TEMPLE
An ancient temple dedicated to goddess Durga
2km from Trivandrum city. The annual festival comes on Feb/Mar attracts thousands of devotees. Pongala an
offering to goddess is most important event among this festival. Any one can offer these to goddess, no
restriction of caste or religion.
BEEMA PALLI
Beema palli ( church) is a shrine dedicated
to the memory of Beema Beevi , a pious and devote Muslim lady, imbued with divine powers. The chandanakudam
festival in October is the most important one. In July there is a celebration called Beema palli urusu.
THIRUNAKKARA MAHADEVAR TEMPLE
Situated in the heart of Kottayam town is one
of the famous Siva temple dedicated to Lord Siva.
ERUMELI VAVARAMBALAM
This mosque is dedicated to Vavar, a
companion of the deity of Sabarimala temple, Lord Aiyappa. The mosque is unique in that Hindu pilgrims customarily
worship here before their trek to Sabarimala. Festival of this temple is known as Pettathullal.
SIVA TEMPLE, VAIKOM
Temple 40 km north of Kottayam associated
with the legendry Parasurama, is a typical example of the Kerala style of temple architecture. Here the
festival held in November or December and its known as Ashtami.
SREE KRISHNA TEMPLE GURUVAYOOR
This temple is one of the most sacred and
important pilgrim center of Kerala. This historic temple is shrouded in mystery. According to belief, the
temple is the creation of Guru, the preceptor of the Deva & Vayu, the lord of wind. In the chuttambalam (
outer enclosure) is the tall 33.5 meter high Dwajasthambam ( flag-post). Also there is a 7 meter high
Deepasthambam (pillar of lamps) whose 13 circular receptacles provide a truly gorgeous spectacle when lit.
VADAKKUMNATHAN TEMPLE
One of the oldest temple in the state, the
Vadakkumnathan temple is a classical example of the Kerala style of architecture and has many decorative
murals and pieces of art. This is the venue of the world famous pooram festival celebrated annually in
April-May. The fire works and procession of 30 caparisoned elephants decorated with gold ornaments &
colorfully decorated umbrellas accompanied by chenda melam, the Kerala music, is a spectacular sight.
MARAMON CONVENTION KOZHENCHERRY
Maramon Christian convention on the river
sand bed of Kozhencherry and Maramon of Pampa river under the auspices of the Marthoma church, in February
every year is world famous. This is the world's largest gathering of Christians attracting over a milion
people for one week from Sunday to Sunday.
SABARIMALA
In the midst of thick forest is one of the
most popular Hindu pilgrimage centers of India,on account of the famous Aiyappa temple about 914 meters above
sea level. The devotees taking oath to worship in Sabarimala follow self purification known as vratham over a
month. thousands of devotees trekking miles and miles on foot singing songs of praises of the Lord Aiyappa is
an inspiring and fascinating scene. The festival season is in Nov/Dec. Women between the age of 14 & 40
are not allowed.
VALIYA PALLI & CHERIA PALLI
This two churches dedicated to St.Mary were
built in 1515 AD & 1579 AD respectively. The valiya palli is known for its Persian cross and pallavi
inscription. The cheria palli houses some of the most exquisite murals & paintings based on Biblical and
non-Biblical themes.
CHOTANIKARA DEVI TEMPLE
About 20 km from Ernakulam, Devi temple at
Chotanikara on the Piravam -Kottayam road, attracts large number of worshippers from all over the
country every day for the cure of various diseases, especially known for mental cure. Navarathri festival at
Chotanikara is very famous.
MALAYATOOR
Annual pilgrimage to the Malayatoor church on
the hill top about 4 km from Kalady and 57 km from Ernakulam. Driving around the hill amidst natural scenery
is a fascinating experience. St.Thomas, the apostle founded a church here when he came on his Christian
mission. His foot steps are seen here.
THIRUNAVAYA
Thirunavaya is historical on account of the
Mamaankam festival, a grand assembly of the rulers of Kerala, held here once in 12 years. The festival was
founded by Cheraman Perumal and was last performed in 1775.This temple is also known as the Benares of the
south. It is situated 8 kms from Tirur on the banks of river Bharatapuzha.
NERCHA FESTIVAL, VELIANCODE
Nercha festival was commenced after the death
of Veliancode Thangal claimed to be the descendent of prophet Mohammed. The annual festival is mostly a
recital of holy Quran at the mosque of Thangal and supply feast to the poor.
